Emoji, letterlijk vertaald ‘beeld karakters’, is het japanse woord voor de gezichtjes en andere symbolen die gebruikers van e-mail en tekstberichten ter beschikking staan om hun gevoelens op een visuele manier uit te drukken. In Japan zijn ze al jaren een alledaags onderdeel van het versturen en ontvangen van berichten via de computer en mobiele telefonie. Aangepaste versies zijn het afgelopen twee jaar ook in allerlei aangepaste varianten beschikbaar gekomen als App voor de iPhone, al is het gebruik ervan is hier nog lang niet zo wijd verbreid als in Japan.
