This poster announces the presentation of a book/exhibition about the work of graphic designer Bas Oudt (1956 – 2014) by a group of his former students at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. The project was organised around a series of ‘Summerschool’ sessions during which our group would gather and discuss individual progress.

In addition to my 16 page contribution to the publication, I wanted to play around with a handful of vintage commercial mascottes like the ones below, that Bas Oudt and me both share a love for.

From left to right: Flipje van Tiel, a guy made out berries created to promote the De Betuwe jamfactory; Bic Boy by Raymond Savignac for the world renowned manufacturer of ballpoints and other utensils; Gitanes (gypsy) cigarettes, original design by Max Ponty.

Close to Oudt’s allotment garden in the southwest of Amsterdam, this wonderful old traffic sign (Exit – Watch pedestrians!) is still in use. School’s Oudt!

And what’s up with those kiwis?

Dustjacket design by Claudi Kessels

Bas Oudt was nearly blind at the final stage of his life, and used a white stick to move around the city. With Bas’ approval, we chose the Kiwi bird as a visual metaphor for the way he  was rummaging about…
